Tamagotchi Smart
The Tamagotchi Smart, also known as たまごっちスマート Tamagotchi Sumāto, is a Tamagotchi version released by Bandai Japan. It came out in November 2021 when Tamagotchis were 25 years old. Tamagotchi Smart is different from older Tamagotchi toys. It’s like a watch you can wear on your wrist, similar to an Apple Watch and other wearable devices.
Design
The Tamagotchi Smart is a small device, about 2.5 inches tall. It’s about the same size as older Tamagotchi toys. The front has clear plastic with the Tamagotchi logo above the screen. It has only one working button on the front, called the “home button.” The other two buttons are just for looks.
You use the home button to wake up the toy and open the main menu. You can also use it to go back when you’re in a menu. The screen can sense when you touch it. You can touch 4 spots on the screen or swipe your finger across it to do different things. This replaces the old buttons.
The sides of the Tamagotchi Smart have plastic covers. One side has a place to charge it, and the other side has a spot to put in a special card called a Tama SmaCard.
The toy can hear sounds, so you can “talk” to your Tamagotchi. It can also count your steps. Each Tamagotchi Smart comes with a watch strap so you can wear it. It also comes with a cable to charge it.
When fully charged, it can work for about 30 hours if you use the screen for about an hour each day. It takes about 2 hours to charge fully. It’s best to unplug it when it’s done charging.

Gameplay
TamaSma Cards
The Tamagotchi Smart uses special cards called TamaSma Cards. These cards add new stuff to your pet’s world. You get new characters, foods, toys, accessories, and even games. You can only use one card at a time, and each card works with up to 3 Tamagotchi Smarts.
Clock Face
The clock on your Tamagotchi Smart can look different ways. There are nine styles to choose from. Some even show how many steps you’ve taken.
Communication
Your pet stays in one spot on the screen, but you can do lots with it. You can pet it by touching the screen, talk to it using your voice (the toy can hear you!), and ask how it’s feeling. It even asks for pets when it wakes up at 7 AM and goes to bed at night.
Status/Setting
Icon This icon shows how your pet is doing. It tells you how happy and hungry your pet is. You can also see how many days you’ve been raising your pet and change some settings here.
Food Icon
Use this to feed your pet meals and snacks. Meals make it less hungry, and snacks make it happier.
Toilet/Bath
Icon This is for when your pet needs to go to the bathroom or take a bath. Keeping your pet clean is important!
Inventory Icon
This holds toys and accessories for your pet. Some toys can break after using them a lot, but there’s always a default toy that never breaks.
App Icon
This lets you buy stuff, play a dating game when your pet grows up, and take selfies with your pet. You can even decorate these photos!
Go Outside Icon
Your pet can visit a place called the Square. Here, it might play minigames or work part-time jobs to earn Gotchi Points. Jobs include things like remembering drinks, dancing, delivering food, and grooming other pets.
Connection Icon
This lets you connect with other Tamagotchi Smarts nearby. Your pets can talk to each other!
Running Away and Death
If you don’t take good care of your pet, it might pack a suitcase and try to run away. Even worse, if you neglect it for too long, it could get very sick and die. But don’t worry too much – if either of these things happen, you can always start over with a new egg.
Remember, the most important thing is to keep your Tamagotchi happy and healthy. Play with it, feed it, and keep it clean. That’s what makes it fun.
Accessories
You can buy some cool accessories to make your Tamagotchi Smart look different or protect it:
Neck Straps
These are like lanyards you can wear around your neck. They cost 990 yen. You can choose between 2 types:
- Smart White
- MintPink
These straps have pictures of Tamagotchi characters on them. There’s a loop at the bottom where you can attach your Tamagotchi Smart.
Screen Protector & Cleaner
This is a set to keep your Tamagotchi’s screen safe and clean. It costs 480 yen. In each pack, you get:
- A screen protector
- Something to help you put the protector on
- A cleaning pad you can stick to the back of your Tamagotchi Smart
Each pack has a picture of a Tamagotchi character on it.
Watch Straps
These are different colored straps so you can wear your Tamagotchi Smart like a watch. They cost 1100 yen each. You can choose from 4 colors:
- Juicy Red
- Dreamy Purple
- Lemon Yellow
- Pure Black
With these extras, you can make your Tamagotchi Smart look the way you want and keep it safe, too.
Glitches
The Tamagotchi Smart can have a few issues. Here’s what to watch out for:
Port Cover Changing Color
The rubber flaps that cover the charging and TamaSma Card holes can change color. This happens most on white and Sanrio shells. It’s hard to clean off. You can keep your Tamagotchi in a case or cover the holes with pretty tape to protect them.
Battery Problems
If the battery runs out completely, or if you charge it for more than two hours, you might have trouble turning it on or charging it again. Here’s what might happen:
- It won’t turn on at all
- It keeps turning itself on and off while charging
To fix this:
- Let it charge for the full two hours without stopping
- If it won’t turn on, hold down the middle button after charging
- If it keeps turning on and off, wait 10-20 minutes while it’s charging
To save the battery when you’re not using it for a long time:
- Charge it fully
- Press the reset button
- Hold down both the reset and front buttons until you see the ROM screen
- Let it sit on that screen until it turns off by itself
Flickering Charging Screen
When you’re charging, the battery icon might flicker between full and empty. This usually happens if the battery ran out completely. To fix it, charge for two full hours. The flickering should stop after 10-20 minutes.
Screen Tear
Sometimes when you change screens, you might see a bit of the old screen for a second. This usually happens when the battery is getting low.
Trivia
Fun Facts about the Tamagotchi Smart
1. Before the Tamagotchi Smart came out, Bandai had a contest in June 2021. Winners got a special white Smart and a 1996 Friends SmaCard in August. People had to pay 7,480 yen to enter, but only winners had to pay the full price.
2. Bandai worked with a music group called NiziU to advertise the Tamagotchi Smart. NiziU was in videos and pictures for it, and even got their own TamaSma Card and Smart design.
3. Before showing the Tamagotchi Smart, Bandai gave hints on their website. For example, “POP x rabbit” meant Poptchi, and “Connect x circle” meant Wawatchi.
4. The Tamagotchi Smart uses some ideas from another Bandai toy called the Digimon Vital Bracelet. Both are watches, count steps, and use cards to add new stuff.
5. The Tamagotchi Smart is the first to:
- Not have Memetchi in the basic version since 2004
- Have a battery you can recharge
- Only have one real button
- Have a touch screen
- Have toys and accessories that wear out after using them a lot
- Not show if a Tamagotchi is a boy or girl on its profile (but it still matters for growing up and getting married)
6. The Tamagotchi Smart is like the Tamagotchi Pix that came out the same year in other countries. Both let you pet your Tamagotchi, play touch games, get food and toys delivered, take and decorate photos, and have smoother animations.
7. Some characters from an older Tamagotchi game were supposed to be in new TamaSma Cards, but they stopped making new cards before it happened. One character, Himespetchi, almost made it onto a special card, but didn’t get enough votes.
8. Only one special item, called a treasure, came out for the Smart. It was 1996 VR Goggles that people could get at special events when the Smart first came out.
