Tamagotchi On/Meets
The Tamagotchi On is a new color Tamagotchi released by Bandai. In Japan, it’s called Tamagotchi Meets, and in Korea, it’s called Tamagotchi Some. Bandai released it on November 23, 2018 in Japan. It came out later in other countries: July 10, 2019 in Canada, and July 28, 2019 in the USA.
The Tamagotchi On is newer than the Tamagotchi m!x. It does a lot of the same things, but it also has some new stuff you can do and new characters to play with. It’s special because it’s the first Tamagotchi with a color screen that people in North America could buy.
Design
The Tamagotchi On is the same size as the older Tamagotchi m!x. It has a clear cover on the front that goes all the way across. This is different from the Tamagotchi m!x, which had a cover with a “Cracked Egg” pattern that didn’t cover the buttons. Under this clear cover, there’s a picture printed on the toy. The cover itself also has matching pictures on it.
At the top of the toy, there’s a small spot that uses infrared light to connect with other Tamagotchis. The English and Japanese versions can use both infrared and Bluetooth to connect.
Like the older m!x, the On/Meets/Some (which are all names for the same version in different countries) doesn’t show icons on the main screen. Instead, the animations take up the whole screen. When you press the A button, you’ll see 10 icons, and a little text box above tells you what each icon does. If your Tamagotchi needs attention, you won’t see that icon with the other 10. Instead, it shows up in the top-right corner of the screen.
Gameplay
M!x
This is a special feature where your Tamagotchi’s babies inherit looks from their parents. Starting from the second generation, you’ll notice the baby’s body colors come from its parents. As it grows, you’ll see more traits from its mom and dad. Sometimes, traits from grandparents or great-grandparents might show up, too. If you connect with a friend’s Tamagotchi, you can even get traits from their special characters.
Twins
From the second generation on, you might get a surprise – twin babies! These twins can grow up to look exactly the same or they might look different. When it’s time for them to get married, you get to choose which twin ties the knot.
Tama Pets
Your Tamagotchi can now have its own pet. To get one, you leave a toy outside and check later to see if a pet has come. You can choose to keep it or not. Different versions of the game have different pets. These pets can even have babies with other pets by meeting outside or by connecting to another Tamagotchi.
Happy Meter
This is like a happiness thermometer for your Tamagotchi. It goes up to 100 points, shown by 18 colored bars. Baby, child, and teen Tamagotchis can only fill it halfway, but adults can fill the whole thing. The fuller it is, the happier your Tamagotchi acts. It affects how they grow and what they inherit from their parents. You can make them happier by feeding them snacks, playing games, using toys, traveling, or using the toilet.
Food and Color Change
The food menu has two parts: the Fridge and the Restaurant. The Fridge has basic foods and any food you’ve bought. The Restaurant has meals and snacks you can buy with Gotchi Points. Some foods can change your Tamagotchi’s color if you feed them five times. You can get colors like yellow, red, blue, white, pink, purple, and grey.
Bathroom and Cleanliness
Your Tamagotchi will need to poop throughout its life. You need to clean it up using the Bathroom icon. If you’re quick, you can catch them before they poop and they’ll use the toilet instead – this makes them happier! You also need to bathe your Tamagotchi and clean its room. If you don’t do these things for 24 hours, your Tamagotchi might get sick.
Family Icon
This lets you see your Tamagotchi’s family tree and a family photo. From the second generation on, you can even visit your Tamagotchi’s parents!
Travel
There are 2 travel options: My Town and Tama Resort. In My Town, you can visit shops, play games, and meet characters in the park. In Tama Resort, there are different locations you can unlock by doing special things in the game. Each place has its own park, shop, and special events.
Games
The Tamagotchi On has a variety of fun games you can play. In the Game Corner, you’ll find different games depending on which version of Tamagotchi On you have. For example, in the Fairy and Magic versions, you can play Surfing, where you quickly press a button to fill a meter and help your Tamagotchi ride a big wave. There’s also a Dolphin game where you move up and down to catch presents from Dolphintchi while avoiding Sharktchi.
In the Pastel version, you can play Bunny, where you guess which bush a bunny is hiding behind, or Egg Match, where you find pairs of eggs hidden under bushes. The Sanrio version has a Quiz game about Sanrio characters and a matching game with Sanrio characters hidden on lilypads.
The Fantasy and Wonder Garden versions offer a Library game where you count books, and a Dressmaker game where you press buttons quickly to create a beautiful dress. In the Sweets version, you can run a taiyaki stand or top desserts with strawberries on conveyor belts.
Outside the Game Corner, there are more games in different locations. In Food Town, you can play a Sushi Bar game where you select the right sushi from a moving conveyor belt. The Toy Park has a Gym game where your Tamagotchi bounces on a trampoline and you have to press buttons to match arrow directions. In Mariland (in the Sanrio version), there’s a Mushroom game where you count how many mushrooms My Melody has collected.
Each game has its own rules and ways to win. Some games end if you make a mistake, while others give you a certain number of tries. Many games have a “perfect” score you can aim for, like catching 15 presents in the Dolphin game or getting 10 correct selections in the Gym game. These games not only make your Tamagotchi happier but also help you earn Gotchi Points, which you can use to buy food, accessories, and other items for your Tamagotchi.
Connectivity
You can connect your Tamagotchi On to other Tamagotchi On devices using Bluetooth or infrared. You can also connect to an app on your phone or tablet. This lets you do things like exchange presents, play games together, and even have your Tamagotchis get married!
Sickness and Death
Your Tamagotchi can get sick, especially right after it evolves or if you don’t take good care of it. If it eats too many snacks too fast, it can get a toothache. You can cure these with the First Aid icon. If you really neglect your Tamagotchi, the Grim Gotchi might show up. You have 15 minutes to save your Tamagotchi by taking it to the hospital. If you don’t, it will die. But don’t worry – you can always start over with a new egg, and you’ll keep all the places you’ve unlocked, the food and items you’ve bought, and your Gotchi Points.
Versions
The Tamagotchi On comes in different versions, just like older Tamagotchis. Each version has special characters and places you can only find in that version. Here are the different types:
- Fairy: This came out in November 2018 in Japan and July 2019 in the USA. It has a special place called Fairy Land where you can meet and marry characters like Fairytchi and Unipegasatchi.
- Magic: This also came out in November 2018 in Japan and July 2019 in the USA. It has a special place called Magic Land where you can meet and marry characters like Majoritchi and Korobatchi.
- Pastel: This came out in Japan in March 2019. It has two new places: Easter Land and Flower Garden. In these places, you can meet and marry new characters like Eggbasketchi, Tamaladytchi, Flower Fleur, and Butterflytchi.
- Sanrio Characters: This came out in Japan in June 2019. It has characters from Sanrio, like Hello Kitty and friends. It also has new characters like Kuromi and Keroppi, and special places like Strawberry Kingdom and Mariland.
- Fantasy: This came out in Japan in July 2019. It has a flying library ship and three new places: Princess Palace, Arabian Night, and Wonder Garden. You can meet and marry characters like Prince Mametchi, Meloarabian, and Yumemi Alice.
- Sweets: This came out in Japan in November 2019. It has two new places: Dolce Town and Wagashi Village. You can meet characters like Amamelotchi, Hotcaketchi, and Wagassiertchi.
- Wonder Garden: This came out in the USA in July 2020. It’s like the Fantasy version, but it only has one new place called Wonder Garden. It keeps most of the same stuff as the Fairy and Magic versions, but it looks different on the outside.
Each version gives you a chance to meet different characters and visit different places. This makes each Tamagotchi On special and gives you a reason to try different versions if you want to see all the characters and places.
Tamagotchi On App
The Tamagotchi Meets App and Tamagotchi On App were special apps you could use with your Tamagotchi. The Meets App came out on November 10, 2018, and the On App came out on July 28, 2019. These apps let you do cool things with your Tamagotchi:
- You could send your Tamagotchi to a place called a plaza.
- In the plaza, you could play games, get items, earn Gotchi Points, and even have your Tamagotchi get married to other characters.
- Sometimes, the app would give out special items and characters you couldn’t get anywhere else. For example, in February 2019, they gave out a character called Okazarutchi.
These apps worked with all types of Tamagotchi On or Meets, even if they were in different languages. This was really neat because:
- If you got food or items from the app, they would keep their original language name on your Tamagotchi.
- You could have your Tamagotchi marry characters from other countries. This meant you could get babies with looks that weren’t usually available in your country.
Sadly, these apps aren’t around anymore. They shut down the Meets App on February 28, 2022, and the On App on August 31, 2022. But there’s good news! Some Tamagotchi fans made their own app called MixingMeets. This app lets people keep using some of the features from the old apps even after they were shut down.
Tamagotchi Meets Station
The Tamagotchi Meets Station was a special machine found in some stores in Japan. It was like an upgrade to the older Tamagotchi m!x stations. Here’s what you could do with it:
- Download cool stuff for your Tamagotchi:
- Special items
- Accessories (like clothes or hats)
- Wallpapers (backgrounds for your Tamagotchi’s screen)
- Games
- New places to visit
- You could even have your Tamagotchi marry special characters that you couldn’t find anywhere else!
- The stuff you could get from these stations was different depending on where you were in Japan and what time of year it was.
Sadly, they stopped using these stations on November 21, 2021.
Special Characters and Places: The stations had some characters and places you couldn’t get anywhere else. Some special places were:
- Cherry Blossom Viewing
- Fireworks Festival
- Tama Slope
Games: The stations had some fun games you could play:
- Bunny Count:
- Bunnies run around and hide behind eggs.
- You have to remember how many bunnies there are.
- Then you use buttons to guess the right number.
- Somen Noodle Catch:
- Your Tamagotchi is at a sushi restaurant.
- Noodles slide down from both sides.
- You press buttons to help your Tamagotchi catch the noodles.
- Rice Cake:
- Your Tamagotchi is making mochi (a kind of rice cake).
- Arrows show up on the screen.
- You press buttons to match the arrows and help pound the mochi.
- Sometimes you have to press a button twice when two arrows show up.
These stations made the Tamagotchi On even more fun by giving players new things to do and collect!
Accessories
The Tamagotchi On had some cool accessories you could buy, but they were only sold in Japan. There were 2 main types:
Standard Neck Straps
These were like lanyards (the kind of string you might wear around your neck to hold a name tag). You could attach your Tamagotchi On to these and wear it around your neck. They cost 990 yen (that’s about $9 in U.S. dollars). There were four different designs:
- Vitamin Flower
- Poppin Ice
- Glitter Pop
- Prism Cosmetics
Each of these had its own special look. Imagine bright, fun colors and patterns that match the Tamagotchi style.
Tomo Charm Sets
These were extra special lanyards. They came with little plastic charms shaped like triangles. These charms had pictures of Tamagotchi characters on them. There was a blank space on each charm where you could write your Tamagotchi On app ID number and your name.
The cool thing about these charms was that you could trade them with your friends. So you could collect different charms and put them on your lanyard. It was like collecting and trading baseball cards, but for Tamagotchi fans! These Tomo Charm sets cost a bit more – 1,320 yen (about $12 in U.S. dollars).
They came in 3 different designs:
- Lovely Sweets
- Pastel Dream
- Sanrio (this one probably had characters like Hello Kitty on it)
These accessories were a fun way for Tamagotchi fans to show off their love for the game and connect with other fans. It’s too bad they were only sold in Japan, because they sound pretty cool.
Glitches
The Tamagotchi On/Meets sometimes has problems or mistakes in the game. These are called glitches. Here are some glitches that can happen on all versions of the Tamagotchi On:
Naming Screen Problem
If you leave your Tamagotchi on the screen where you give it a name for too long, the screen might go black. This can sometimes erase everything on your Tamagotchi, making you start over from the beginning.
Name Changing
Sometimes, after your Tamagotchi dies or you reset it, one or two letters in its name (or your name) might change to random letters or symbols. Nobody knows why this happens.
Bluetooth Connection Issues
Some of the early Pastel Meets Tamagotchis (version 55 or lower) had trouble connecting to the app. They might only connect 1 out of 5 times you try. Newer versions fixed this problem.
Food Menu Glitch
Sometimes when you open the food menu, you might see only one blank food item. If your Tamagotchi eats it, it looks like it’s eating nothing. After that, the fridge might look empty. This is really bad if it happens when your Tamagotchi is a baby because you can’t feed it. Usually, this problem fixes itself when your Tamagotchi grows up.
Peter Pan Glitch
This is a rare problem where your Tamagotchi gets stuck as a baby or child and never grows up. People think it might happen if you bring a young Tamagotchi into the app, but nobody knows for sure. To fix this, you have to either:
- Start all over
- Let your Tamagotchi die (in the game)
- Use a special computer program to make it grow up
Sometimes your Tamagotchi might be a little slow to grow up, taking an extra day or two. This is normal and not the Peter Pan glitch. If you wait 1-2 days without using the app or changing the time, it should grow up. If it doesn’t, then it might be the Peter Pan glitch.
These glitches can be frustrating, but they don’t happen to everyone. Knowing about them can help you take care of your Tamagotchi better.
Trivia
1. The Tamagotchi On is special because it lets you raise more than one character at a time without cheating or using tricks. The last time a regular Tamagotchi could do this was the Tamagotchi Connection Version 5 Celebrity.
2. Bandai told everyone about the Tamagotchi On on May 13, 2019. But Amazon.com started letting people order it a week before that. They even showed pictures and told people how it would work.
3. The first Tamagotchi On toys in English were given out in May 2019 at a special event called the Clamour Summit 2019.
4. In Korea, they showed off the Tamagotchi Ssome (that’s what they call it there) at a big toy show called the Character Licensing Expo 2019. This happened from July 17th to 21st at a place called Starfield COEX Mall in South Korea. People could start ordering it on September 1st.
5. The Korean name “Ssome” comes from a Korean word that means “something.” In Korea, people use this word when they’re talking about two people who might be starting to like each other romantically. It’s like saying, “Is there something going on between those two?”
6. Even though they stopped making the Tamagotchi On and Meets in other countries in 2021, they’re still making and selling the Tamagotchi Ssome online in Korea in 2023. That’s pretty cool for Korean Tamagotchi fans!
