Tamagotchi 4U
The Tamagotchi 4U came out in Japan on September 27, 2014. The 4U’s slogan was “Utility. Unique. United. Universal.” In Japanese, it’s called “Tamagotchi Fōyū”. This Tamagotchi release is part of the newer, colorful versions. Its screen can show 128 by 128 little dots, which makes the pictures look pretty good. It needs two AAA batteries to work.
The 4U is based on a cartoon show called GO-GO Tamagotchi! The story happens in a place called DoriTama Town, and it has 2 new characters. One cool thing about the 4U is that it can connect to things by touching them through NFC. In Japan, there were special “touch spots” where you could put your Tamagotchi to get new stuff like room designs or characters. There was also an app for phones that could give you more things to download. You could even change how your Tamagotchi looks by adding different covers, straps, or cases.
Someone named Mr. Blinky made it possible to change the 4U’s menu to English. They also translated the app to English and made it work even after the company stopped supporting it.
On July 18, 2015, they made an even better version called the Tamagotchi 4U+.

Design
The Tamagotchi 4U is about the same size as the Tamagotchi P’s. It has the same size screen and hard plastic buttons. The back of the 4U is flat and white, like the Tamagotchi Plus Color. This flat back helps it connect to other things by touching them.
On the front, there’s a cover called a faceplate. The basic faceplate is white with little dots around the edge. Under the screen, it says “Tamagotchi 4U”. You can take this faceplate off if you want. There’s a little tab at the bottom to help you do this. When you take it off, you see clear plastic underneath. This clear plastic shows the white part of the toy inside. Around the edge of the faceplate, there’s a gold-colored trim. This makes the 4U look fancy.

Accessories
The Tamagotchi 4U is special because you can change how it looks. There are lots of things you can add to make it look different:
- Faceplates: These are plastic covers you can put on the front of the 4U. They have holes for the screen and buttons. When the 4U first came out, there were 12 different faceplates. Later, they made 30 different designs.
- Deco Sets: These come with a faceplate and stickers. You can use the stickers to make the faceplate look even cooler.
- Charm Straps: These are pretty decorations you can attach to the 4U. They have a clip to put on your bag or pocket. They also have a loop you can put around your wrist to carry the 4U.
- Neck Straps: These are like necklaces for your 4U. You can wear them and have your 4U hanging from your neck.
- Soft Cases: These are like clothes for your 4U. They’re made of soft stuff and cover the 4U to keep it from getting scratched. They have cute bows or fluffy balls on them. There’s a hole in the back so you can still use other decorations.
All these things let you make your Tamagotchi 4U look just how you want it. You can change it to match your style or mood.
Tamagotchi 4U App
The Tamagotchi 4U had its own special app. This app worked with the Tamagotchi 4U using NFC. NFC is a way for the device and phone to talk to each other when they’re close. With this app, you could get extra stuff for your Tamagotchi that you couldn’t get any other way. You could download new characters, clothes, items, and foods for your Tamagotchi.
The cool stuff on the app would change every now and then. Some of the really special things you had to pay. The app only worked on Android phones. You couldn’t get it on iPhones. To use the app, you had to download it from Google Play.
Before you could use the app, you had to do 2 things:
- Make an account with Bandai Namco
- Connect your Tamagotchi 4U to this account
The app was fun while it lasted, but in September 2016, they turned it off. You can’t download it or use it anymore. This app was a big part of what made the Tamagotchi 4U special. It let people add new things to their toy even after they bought it.
Sets
Some special Tamagotchi 4U sets came with extra cool stuff. These sets had a faceplate and a special card called a Touch Card. These Touch Cards had a spot you could touch with your Tamagotchi 4U to get new characters, items, and rooms for your toy.
Here are the special sets:
Aikatsu! Set
- This set had a faceplate with Aikatsu! pictures on it.
- The Touch Card gave you two special characters: Ichigo-chan-tchi and Akari-chan-tchi.
1996 Set
- This set had two faceplates that looked like the very first Tamagotchi from 1996.
- It came with two Touch Cards that gave you Mametchi and Oyajitchi. These characters looked like they did in the old Tamagotchi games.

- You could visit a place called Tamagotchi Town, but it looked like it did in the old days.

These sets were a fun way to get extra special stuff for your Tamagotchi 4U.
Trivia
1. As the second model to incorporate near-field communication (NFC), following the Tamagotchi Friends, the 4U further integrated digital connectivity into the Tamagotchi experience. This technology enabled a range of interactive features, from device-to-device communication to content downloads.
2. The 4U expanded on the concept of downloadable characters, first introduced in the Tamagotchi P’s. This feature significantly increased the variety of virtual pets users could raise, keeping the experience fresh and engaging over time.
3. Breaking from tradition, the 4U became the second color Tamagotchi (and third overall) to omit the teen stage in its growth cycle. This alteration to the life cycle changed the rhythm of pet care, potentially allowing for quicker progression to adult forms.
4. In a notable departure from previous models, the 4U allowed non-adult Tamagotchis to wear accessories. This feature, which would later return in the Tamagotchi Smart, added a new dimension to character customization, allowing users to personalize their pets from an earlier stage.
5. The “touch spot” feature of the 4U drew inspiration from the store Deka Tamagotchis, bringing a similar concept of location-based interactions to the portable device. This feature encouraged users to explore their environment to unlock new content.
6. The Tamagotchi 4U’s cultural impact extended beyond the device itself, inspiring a manga titled “Go-Go Best Friends.” This adaptation demonstrates the Tamagotchi franchise’s continued relevance in various media forms, appealing to fans through different storytelling formats.
7. These features and cultural tie-ins positioned the Tamagotchi 4U as a significant step in the franchise’s evolution, blending nostalgic elements with modern technology and expanded customization options.

- Each time you do this, it counts as one “touch”.
- The more touches you do, the prettier your Tamagotchi’s backyard becomes.
Characters
Base Characters
The way your Tamagotchi grows up depends on how well you take care of it as a child. This includes how many mistakes you make, what skills it learns, and how much it weighs. You can help your Tamagotchi learn skills by feeding it special foods, using certain items, putting it in different rooms, or sending it to class. The game doesn’t show you how many skill points your Tamagotchi has, so you need to keep track yourself.
Your pet gains weight when it eats and loses weight when it plays. Sometimes, the game gives you specific instructions to get enough skill points, like “Use the Experiment Kit 4 times.” If your Tamagotchi doesn’t meet the right conditions to become a specific adult, it will turn into a random adult character. So the better you care for your Tamagotchi and help it learn, the more control you have over how it grows up.

Personality Stages
When your Tamagotchi becomes an adult, it can change even more. We call this new change a “personality stage.” To get to a personality stage, your Tamagotchi needs to do certain things or be a certain way. For example, one Tamagotchi might need to be really smart, while another might need to be very heavy. If your Tamagotchi does the right things, it can turn into this new, special version of itself.
But here’s the interesting part: if your Tamagotchi stops doing the things that made it change, it can go back to how it was before. So if it needed to be smart to change, and then it stops learning, it might change back to its regular adult self.
This means you need to keep taking good care of your Tamagotchi even after it’s all grown up if you want it to stay in its special personality stage.
