Mothra Tamagotchi

The Mothra Tamagotchi, known in Japan as “Mosura no Tamagotchi” or simply “Mothra,” is a specialized version of the Tamagotchi. This version was made because of a movie that came out at the same time called “Rebirth of Mothra II”. The Mothra Tamagotchi is like other Tamagotchis, which were very popular back then, but this one is based on the giant moth monster Mothra from Japanese movies. It’s now considered a collector’s item because it’s so old and was only sold for a short time.

Mothra Tamagotchi

Mothra is a big moth monster that shows up a lot in Godzilla movies. She’s usually a good guy who protects people, Japan, and the whole Earth. Mothra always has two tiny fairy girls with her. These fairies talk for Mothra and help take care of her. They even sing a special song to make Mothra’s egg hatch.

The toy came with a little book that said:

“Hi, we’re Moll and Lora. We’re fairy sisters from the Elias family. Mothra comes from a place called Infant Island, which is really far south. When Mothra first hatches, she’s very small and weak. You need to give her lots of ‘Justice Power’ to help her grow into a full Mothra. Mothra is supposed to be a beautiful, strong goddess who protects life. But sometimes she might go down the wrong path and turn bad. When this happens, you need to teach her the right way. If Mothra gets sick, you should let her hear us sing. To help make the Earth’s future better, use love and fairness to raise Mothra into a great adult moth.”

gameplay

Gameplay

The Mothra Tamagotchi works a lot like the regular Tamagotchi. After you set the clock, Mothra is born, and you have to take care of it as it grows up.

Special Cocoon Stage

One cool thing about the Mothra Tamagotchi is that it has a Cocoon stage. This happens between being a teenager and an adult. You’ll see a big cocoon hanging on the Tokyo Tower. It stays like this for an hour, then turns into an adult. Once it’s in the cocoon, you can’t change what kind of adult it will be.

Checking on Mothra

You can check how Mothra is doing by looking at different screens. You’ll see:

  1. How old Mothra is (in days) and how much it weighs (in tons)
  2. How hungry Mothra is
  3. How happy Mothra is
  4. How much “Justice” Mothra has

Feeding Mothra

You can give Mothra 2 kinds of food:

  1. Meals (usually a leaf, but sometimes an apple or meat for grown-up Mothras)
  2. Snacks (always a cupcake)

Meals make Mothra less hungry and gain 1 ton. Snacks make Mothra happier but gain 2 tons. Be careful, too many snacks can make Mothra sick.

Playing a Game

There’s a game called “Gokigen Up”. You have to guess which of 4 holes Mothra is hiding in. If you find Mothra 3 or 4x, it gets a little happier and loses some weight. If you find Mothra all 5x, it gets even happier and loses more weight.

Cleaning Up

Sometimes Mothra will poop. You need to clean it up or Mothra might get sick if there’s too much poop.

Teaching Mothra

Sometimes Mothra will try to attack a tower. You need to tell it not to do that. This makes Mothra more “Just”, which helps it grow up to be a good Mothra.

Singing to Mothra

If Mothra gets sick, you can make Moll and Lora (the fairy sisters) sing to it. This might take a few tries to make Mothra all better.

Turning Off the Lights

When Mothra goes to sleep, it will ask you to turn off the lights. The lights will come back on when Mothra wakes up.

Mothra Calling for Help

Mothra will beep at you if it’s hungry, unhappy, or going to sleep. It makes a different sound when it’s attacking the tower. Make sure to pay attention when Mothra calls.’

When Mothra Dies

After a long time, Mothra will die. You’ll see a cross with flowers. You can see how old Mothra was and how much it weighed. If you press 2 buttons together, you can start over with a new egg.

If you take really good care of adult Mothra for a week and then stop feeding it, it might lay an egg before it dies.

Living Forever

If you give Mothra the right number of snacks (different for each kind of Mothra), it can live forever. But if you give it too many snacks after that, it might start getting sick again.

FINALLY! I got the special character, Godzilla, in my Tamagotchi Mothra!
FINALLY! I got the special character, Godzilla, in my Tamagotchi Mothra!

1. The Mothra Tamagotchi marks several firsts in the virtual pet landscape. It pioneered licensed themes in Tamagotchi devices and introduced the AM/PM to military time clock format toggle. This feature, while adopted by other vintage models, didn’t become standard until the Tamagotchi Connection.

2. Its idle animation, featuring side-to-side movement and roaring, mirrors that of Digimon virtual pets released shortly before. The Genjintch Tamagotchi later adopted this animation style. Notably, Godzilla’s sprite design influenced many dinosaur-like Digimon species, with DarkTyrannomon bearing a striking resemblance.

3. Uniquely, the Mothra Tamagotchi utilizes its processor’s higher clock speed capability, resulting in more responsive buttons and faster animations. This enhancement, absent in mainline Tamagotchis until the Osutchi and Mesutchi models, is shared with the Tamagotchi Angel.

4. Among the characters, Mayura stands out as the only one not originating from Godzilla or Mothra films.

5. The Mothra Tamagotchi came in 2 ultra-rare colors: Green Waves and Transparent Blue. Green Waves proved more popular due to its appealing design, while the Transparent Blue version became exceptionally scarce. It’s rarely found on eBay or in vintage Tamagotchi stores, with ownership largely limited to wealthy Japanese collectors. The Transparent Blue’s extreme rarity has elevated it to near-mythical status among Tamagotchi fans.

6. The Mothra Tamagotchi was released in Japanese stores to coincide with a film. However, this release was tied to “Rebirth of Mothra II” in 1997, not the 1964 “Mothra vs. Godzilla” film. The 1964 movie’s plot involves a giant egg washing ashore in Japan during a storm. Two fishermen sell it to a company for public display. 2 miniature fairy women, guardians of the egg, attempt to reclaim it for Infant Island. Godzilla attacks the defenseless egg, prompting Mothra to defend her offspring and battle the dinosaur. This classic film established Mothra’s role as a heroic protector, a theme later incorporated into the Tamagotchi version.

Tips & Tricks

Tips and Tricks

1. Mothratchi is the best character you can get in the Mothra Tamagotchi game. It’s a big, beautiful moth, just like in the movies. To get Mothratchi, you have to take really good care of your Mothra or Batora as it grows up. It’s hard to get Mothratchi, but that’s because Mothra is supposed to be a powerful, good god in the stories.

2. Fairytchi is like a younger version of Mothratchi. It has fewer wings, doesn’t look as cool, and is much smaller than Mothratchi. To get Fairytchi, you need to take pretty good care of your Mothra or Batora as it grows up. It’s not as awesome as Mothratchi, but it’s easier to get. You just need to do a good job taking care of your pet, but you don’t have to be perfect.

3. Batora is the worst character you can get in the game. It looks really ugly with scary white triangle eyes, gross black and white wings, and 3 white spots on its black body. You get Batora if you do a bad job taking care of your pet. If you keep forgetting to feed it or play with it, you’ll probably end up with this ugly moth.

4. Makora is in the middle. It’s a bit better than Batora, but still not great. It looks like a cocoon with 4 long, skinny legs. When it’s happy or eating, its eyes disappear and you just see big, ugly teeth and a mouth. It’s pretty easy to get Makora. If you barely take care of your pet, just enough to keep it alive, you’ll probably get Makora.

5. The Mothra Tamagotchi has a special stage called the cocoon stage. Only one other Tamagotchi game has this. It happens after the teenage stage and lasts for exactly 1 hour. The cocoon has little spikes and leans against Tokyo Tower. It moves a little bit. During this hour, you can’t do anything with your pet. What kind of adult it becomes depends on how well you took care of it before it turned into a cocoon. What you do during this hour doesn’t matter.

Characters

When your Mothra grows up to a new stage, like from a baby to a kid, or from a kid to a teenager, the game forgets about any mistakes you made before. This is different from the first Tamagotchi game that came out in 1996.

For example, let’s say you didn’t take good care of your Mothra when it was a child. Maybe you forgot to feed it a few times. But once it becomes a teenager, the game starts fresh. Those times you forgot to feed it as a child don’t count anymore.

So if you want to get a certain kind of adult Mothra, what matters is how you take care of it when it’s a teenager. The mistakes you made earlier, when it was younger, don’t affect what kind of adult it becomes.

To get the special Mothra, you need to take perfect care of Mothra Leo for about 80 hours while it’s awake. Keep its weight between 70 and 79 tons. If you do this right, Mothra Leo will lay an egg. Then, you need to make exactly 5 mistakes in caring for Mothra Leo. If you do all this, the egg will hatch into the special Mothra. It’s tricky because you have to be perfect for a long time, then make just the right number of mistakes on purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Mothra Tamagotchi, released in Japan as "Mosura no Tamagotchi" or simply "Mothra", is a special edition Tamagotchi. Launched in December 1997, it coincided with the release of the film "Rebirth of Mothra II". This unique device blended the global Tamagotchi craze with the beloved kaiju franchise.

While similar in most respects, the Mothra Tamagotchi introduces a unique "Cocoon" stage between the teen and adult phases. Represented as a large cocoon on Tokyo Tower, this stage lasts an hour before the adult Mothra emerges. Additionally, it features a "Justice meter" alongside the standard Hunger and Happiness meters, reflecting Mothra's heroic nature.

Neglecting your Mothra will negatively impact its evolution and lifespan. Ignoring its needs can lead to illness and ultimately death, symbolised by a flower-surrounded cross. Consistent poor care will result in the evolution of undesirable adult forms like Batora or Makora.

Unique to the Mothra and Morino Tamagotchis, the "Cocoon" stage represents a period of metamorphosis. During this one-hour phase, gameplay pauses as the Mothra's adult form, predetermined by pre-cocoon care, is finalized.

Yes, 2 ultra-rare colours exist: Green Waves and Transparent Blue. Green Waves, prized for its design, enjoys more popularity. The Transparent Blue, however, is exceptionally scarce, bordering on mythical status among collectors.
