Tamagotchi M!x

Tamagotchi m!x (たまごっちみくす Tamagotchi Mikusu*), pronounced “Tamagotchi mix”, is a Tamagotchi variant with a color screen launched by Bandai solely in Japan on July 16, 2016. This version introduces the m!x feature, enabling users to generate Tamagotchi offspring that combine characteristics from both parents.

Design

tamagotchi m!x

The Tamagotchi m!x reintroduces the infrared port for connectivity, last seen on the Tamagotchi P’s and absent from the Tamagotchi 4U series, which opted for NFC. The m!x features a printed faceplate covering most of the front, separated from the buttons by an eggshell crack design.

Departing from the traditional 10-icon layout, the m!x utilizes the screen’s full resolution for animations. The 10 icons appear in a menu accessed via the A button, with each icon’s function displayed in a text box above. In this menu, the Attention icon is relocated to the top-right corner of the screen when the Tamagotchi needs attention.

Versions

Six different Tamagotchi m!x versions were released between 2016 and 2018. Each version has unique designs, items, locations, and characters for interaction and marriage. All versions are compatible for connection and marriage. The 6 versions are:

1. Melody: A launch version with exclusive access to Melody Land and its characters.
2. Spacy: Another launch version featuring exclusive access to Spacy Land and its characters.
3. 20th Anniversary: A commemorative edition providing access to Professor Banzo’s Laboratory, Makkakka Town, Uratama Town, and the Gotchi King’s Castle.
4. Dream: Distinguished by a heart-shaped crystal above the screen, this version offers exclusive access to Dream Town, Yumemitchi, and Kiraritchi. A 2018 rerelease added Pianitchi.
5. Gift: A special version in a gift set, featuring the same locations as the 20th Anniversary version plus exclusive access to Present Island and its characters.
6. Sanrio: A licensed variant with exclusive access to Mariland, Twin Stars Land, and Puroland, allowing interaction and marriage with Sanrio characters.

Gameplay

Gameplay

The toy introduced a novel feature called “m!x“. While the first generation’s upbringing remains unchanged, from the second generation onwards, offspring inherit physical traits from their parents.

These traits begin with simple body colors at the baby stage, becoming more pronounced as the Tamagotchi evolves. Some characteristics may vanish for several generations before unexpectedly reappearing later.

Connecting and marrying different versions allows physical traits from version-exclusive characters to transfer between devices, enabling countless offspring possibilities.

Happy Meter

The Happy Meter, visible in the status screen, measures happiness up to 100 points, displayed as 18 colored bars. Younger stages can only fill half the bar (45 points), while adults can fill it completely. The meter’s fullness affects the Tamagotchi’s on-screen behavior, user interactions, and influences evolutions. From the second generation, it slightly impacts inherited genetics.

Happiness decreases over time but can be replenished through various activities like feeding snacks, playing games, using toys, meeting characters, connecting devices, using the app, and toilet use. A Tamagotchi sulking in the corner indicates less than 25% happiness.

Food and Color Change

The Food menu offers two options: Fridge and Restaurant. The Fridge holds default and purchased foods, with icons differentiating meals (rice bowl) from snacks (candy). Restaurants have limited options initially, but unlocking new locations provides access to their unique foods.

Consuming certain foods thrice can alter the Tamagotchi’s body color, including yellow, red, blue, white, pink, purple, and grey.

Bathroom and Cleanliness

Tamagotchis require waste management throughout their lives. Using the Bathroom icon just before they poop allows toilet use, increasing Happiness.

The Bathroom icon also enables bathing. Neglecting baths for 24 hours results in a dirty appearance, potentially leading to illness. The living room requires cleaning via the Vacuum option in the Item Box; 24-hour neglect can cause dirtiness and possible sickness.

Family Icon

The Family icon, fifth on the menu, allows users to view the Tamagotchi’s lineage and family photo. From the second generation, it enables visits to the Tamagotchi’s parents. The Tamagotchi can stay at their parents’ house from 7 AM to 5 PM, with no penalty for late pick-up. Special animations may occur during holiday visits, such as receiving 2000 Gotchi Points on New Year’s. While the m!x has limited family history storage, complete lineages can be saved on the My M!x Land website.

Travel

Two icons are dedicated to travel: one for main town locations and another for Tamafriends’ locations, which unlock progressively through gameplay.

My Town

The m!x primarily takes place in “My Town” (じぶんのタウン Jibun no Town). Four locations are accessible via the TamaDepa and Park option. Items from other towns can alter My Town’s theme, impacting first-generation adult evolution and potentially influencing My Tamas’ genetics from the second generation onward.

  • TamaDepa: Sells accessories, items, and wallpapers, with version-exclusive options.
    • Game Corner: Accessible through TamaDepa, offering two version-specific games.
  • Square: Allows interaction with various NPCs, some appearing at specific times or on certain days.
    • Playroom: Acts as a pause feature, open 7 AM to 5 PM for non-hungry, non-baby Tamagotchis. Late pick-up results in happiness decrease.

TamaFriends Towns

These special, unlockable locations feature a square, shop, event spot, and marriage option. Tamagotchis can befriend local characters, propose marriage, buy exclusive items, and experience town-specific animations or minigames.

Games

  • Rainbow Painter (Melody & Spacy): Players face a rainbow and three paint buckets. As colors vanish, correct combinations must be selected to restore them. A and B buttons control paintbrush movement and color selection, respectively. Primary colors need double selection, while secondary colors require mixing. Incorrect choices end the game. Ten successful paintings yield a perfect score.
  • Star Catch (Melody & Spacy): Objects descend from the screen’s top. When “CATCH!” appears, A (left) or B (right) must be pressed to catch falling items. Stars require one press, UFOs need two. Mistimed or incorrect button presses end the game. Ten successful catches constitute a perfect game.
  • ★20th★Party Ball (20th Anniversary): Tamagotchis choose from three party balls. Correct choices result in confetti showers, while wrong ones drop bathtubs on their heads. The game spans five rounds, with incorrect choices leading to game over.
  • Best★Shot (20th Anniversary): Players control a royal servant photographing a Tamagotchi parade. A tri-colored bar appears on-screen; perfect photos require stopping the cursor in the red section. The game consists of five rounds.
  • Dance♪Session (Dream): Tamagotchis participate in a dance class alongside Miraitchi, Clulutchi, and Mr. Micchi. Players must match arrow directions using A (left) or B (right) buttons. Later stages introduce double arrows requiring dual button presses. Mistimed or incorrect presses end the game. Ten correct selections yield a perfect score.
  • Dream Match (Dream): Tamagotchis face 15 flowers briefly revealing hidden characters (7 pairs of Dream School characters and 1 Spacytchi). Players must match character pairs while avoiding Spacytchi to win.
  • ♥Wrapping♥ (Gift): Tamagotchis wrap presents within a 12-second timeframe. Players rapidly press A to fill a meter, determining the gift’s final quality.
  • Russian★Choux (Gift): Tamagotchis choose from three cream puffs. Correct choices reveal strawberry fillings, while wrong ones contain hot peppers causing fiery reactions. The game spans five rounds, with incorrect choices ending play.
  • Strawberry Cards (Sanrio): Tamagotchis face 15 cards briefly revealing hidden characters (7 Sanrio character pairs and 1 Kuromi). Players must match character pairs while avoiding Kuromi to succeed.
  • Gudetama Catch (Sanrio): Gudetama displays self-portraits in thought bubbles. Players control a plate to catch corresponding images, using A and B for left and right movement. The game consists of 10 rounds, with mistakes leading to game over.

Connectivity

The m!x employs infrared technology for connections with other m!x and Tamagotchi Meets devices, as well as m!x Stations. It generates passwords for My M!x Land website and Tamagotchi Meets app access. Connecting to other m!x devices offers these options:

  • Play: Tamagotchis engage in joint activities.
    • Visit: One Tamagotchi briefly stays at the other’s residence.
    • Quiz: Tamagotchis attempt to identify the other’s paternal parent.
    • Photo: A joint photo session, with results saved in the Memory Icon’s Photo section.
  • Gift: Users can exchange various in-game items and features.
  • Marriage Proposal: Opposite-gender Tamagotchis can propose marriage if both parties agree.
  • Fortune Telling: Uranaitchi predicts potential offspring appearances or assesses adult Tamagotchis’ compatibility.

Tamagotchi Meets device connections limit interactions to playdates and one-way gifting from m!x to Meets.

Sickness and Death

Throughout its lifespan, the Tamagotchi experiences periodic illnesses. These occur naturally within hours of evolution, but can also result from neglect, such as prolonged uncleanliness of the Tamagotchi or its environment, or accumulated waste. Rapid snack consumption may lead to toothaches. Both ailments are remedied using the First Aid icon.

Severe neglect summons the Grim Gotchi. Employing the First Aid icon transports the Tamagotchi to medical care, while Chestnut Angel dispels the Grim Gotchi. Failing to act within a quarter-hour results in the Tamagotchi’s demise. The death screen displays only the Tamagotchi’s spectral form. Simultaneous pressing of A and C buttons initiates a new egg. The subsequent hatchling loses all previously inherited genetic traits, but retains unlocked locations, acquired food and items, and accumulated Gotchi Points.

Tamagotchi m!x Station

Tamgotchi M!x Station

A companion device named Tamagotchi m!x Station launched concurrently with the m!x series. Functioning as a Deka Tamagotchi, these stations were situated in Japanese retail locations, allowing m!x devices to interface for unique content. The stations’ offerings rotated seasonally to align with thematic elements. Users could access two distinct modes on the station:

School Mode

  • Minigames: A variety of year-round activities including culinary challenges, room tidying, and trivia contests were available. Seasonal offerings, such as Goldfish Dipping and Swimming Relay, appeared during summer months. These games accommodated up to four participants, with performance determining gotchi point and item rewards.
  • Flea Market: This feature enabled users to engage in commerce, purchasing items from other users or offering their own for sale.
  • School Swap: This option facilitated the acquisition of exclusive educational-themed items via download.
  • M!x Generator: Users could select a pair of Tamagotchi characters, prompting Uranaitchi to forecast their potential offspring’s appearance.

My M!x Land

My M!x Land is an online platform designed to integrate seamlessly with the Tamagotchi m!x. This site enables users to archive and peruse their complete family lineage while also engaging in point-earning activities. Drawing parallels to TamaTown, users can transfer their Tamagotchi to the site by entering a device-generated password when choosing the PC option within the Connectivity menu. Upon the Tamagotchi’s return to the device, the site provides a password facilitating the transfer of any earned gotchi points from gameplay. The platform offers two game options: “Flower Shop” and “Cake Making”. During these games, users relinquish direct control over their Tamagotchi, with outcomes determined randomly between success and failure.

Access to the website necessitates a Japan-based registered Bandai Namco account.

Accessories

tamagotchi m!x accessories

Accessory straps for the Tamagotchi m!x device became available on July 16, 2016, offering users convenient portability options. Two distinct strap types were introduced:

  1. The ribbon accessory strap, priced at 1,296 yen, came in two designs: Colorful Egg and Girly Pink. These straps provided a decorative element while allowing users to carry their devices.
  2. The neck strap, with a price point of 972 yen, was offered in two variations: Rainbow Sky and Cute Pom-Poms. This option allowed users to wear their Tamagotchi m!x around their neck for easy access.

These accessories enhanced the device’s mobility while adding a personalized touch, catering to different user preferences in both style and functionality.

Trivia

Trivia

1. The Tamagotchi m!x introduced a novel approach to teen stage characters. Instead of twelve distinct individuals, it features six characters with gender variations. Male versions sport blue bodies, while females have pink ones. This unique feature is exclusive to the teen growth stage and marks the first instance of such a design in Tamagotchi releases.

2. At the 2016 Tokyo Toy Show, the Tamagotchi m!x garnered recognition, securing a grand prize in the communication division. This accolade was attributed to its innovative connectivity features, allowing interaction with other m!x devices and m!x stations.

3. Tamagotchi TV produced a promotional video series titled “The Story of Mikusu” (愛のみくす物語 Ai no Mikusu Monogatari) to market the m!x. These videos chronicled the life journey of Mikusu, the offspring of Kuchipatchi and Violetchi, from birth through marriage. The narrative was brought to life by actors donning Tamagotchi mascot headpieces.

4. To further amplify the series’ promotion, masks depicting Kuchipatchi & Violetchi adorned a wall in Shibuya Station, Japan. Passersby were invited to remove and keep these masks, creating an interactive promotional experience.

Relationship Levels

The Tamagotchi m!x incorporates a tiered system to represent the depth of relationships between characters:

Blue – Acquaintance: This initial level signifies a basic familiarity between Tamagotchis.

Green – Friend: At this stage, Tamagotchis have developed a closer bond, moving beyond mere acquaintanceship.

Orange – Lover: This level indicates a romantic connection has formed between the Tamagotchis.

Red – Passionate Lover: The highest tier, representing an intense and deeply committed romantic relationship between Tamagotchis.

*** In the early morning hours of 7am to 9am, Tamagotchi owners might be visited by Madamtchi, a roving vendor. She offers a daily-changing selection of discounted items from various towns, providing a brief window for savvy shoppers to acquire diverse goods at reduced prices.

***On the 10th, 20th, and 30th of each month, between 10am and 1pm, the Eco Triplets may seek your help in cleaning the Park. This eco-friendly activity offers potential rewards: the Eco Fork (granting 50% restaurant discounts), the Eco Badge (a playable item for your Tamagotchi), or the rare Eco Bag (providing 50% off at TamaDepa and Town Stores). The Eco Bag, being the most coveted, typically requires numerous attempts before you can get it.

***After remodeling your Tamagotchi’s living room 2 to 3 times, you’ll receive a 50% discount voucher. This reward impacts future purchases, as all living room wallpapers thereafter become permanently available at half their original price.

***To alter your park’s theme and influence your Tamagotchi’s appearance, select a toy from your desired location and use it seven times before adulthood. The park will visibly change, and your Tamagotchi’s adult form will reflect either parent’s origin, depending on the chosen theme. This feature adds depth to character development, linking environment to heredity.

***To temporarily change your Tamagotchi’s color in M!X, feed it specific foods or drinks five times. Options include Lemon Mousse or Lemonade for yellow, Tomato Juice for red, Melon Soda for green, and unique items from special locations like Marine Juice from Mermaid Palace for blue. The new color lasts 24 hours before fading.

***To propose in the Tamagotchi m!x, first buy a ring from Tama Depa’s fourth option: a 500 GP ring or a 5000 GP Diamond Ring with higher success rates. Visit your chosen character’s location and select “Propose”. Success depends on relationship strength, with Flower Hills’ Fortune Telling offering success predictions. Rings are consumed regardless of the outcome, requiring repurchase for future proposals.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Tamagotchi m!x introduces the "m!x" feature, allowing offspring to inherit traits from both parents. This results in a vast array of unique Tamagotchi characters over generations. Additionally, it features a colour screen and infrared connectivity for interactions and marriages with other m!x devices and special m!x Stations.

From the second generation onwards, offspring inherit physical characteristics from their parents. This starts with simple colour variations at the baby stage and develops into more distinct features as the Tamagotchi grows. Traits can even skip generations before reappearing. Connecting with different m!x versions allows for even more diverse offspring by transferring traits from version-exclusive characters.

The Happy Meter reflects your Tamagotchi's overall well-being. Maintaining a high level of happiness affects their behaviour, interactions, and even influences evolutions. From the second generation, the Happy Meter also slightly impacts inherited traits. You can increase happiness through activities like feeding, playing games, and socialising.

Feeding your Tamagotchi certain foods or drinks five times in a row temporarily changes their colour for 24 hours. For instance, Lemon Mousse makes them yellow, Tomato Juice turns them red, and Melon Soda results in a green hue. Special locations offer unique colour-changing items, like the Marine Juice from Mermaid Palace for a blue shade.

The m!x features various locations accessible through the travel icons. "My Town" is the main hub with shops, a park, and a playroom. "Tamafriends Towns" are special unlockable areas with unique characters, shops, and activities. These are unlocked through various methods like gameplay progression, using specific items, or connecting with other devices.

First, purchase a ring from Tama Depa. You can choose between a standard ring or a more expensive Diamond Ring with a higher success rate. Then, visit the desired character's location and select "Propose". Success depends on the strength of your Tamagotchi's relationship with the other character. You can get a prediction from Uranaitchi's Fortune Telling in Flower Hills.

Neglecting your Tamagotchi's needs, such as hygiene and cleanliness, can lead to sickness. Untreated illnesses might summon the Grim Gotchi. If you don't act quickly, your Tamagotchi will pass away, and a new egg will appear. The next generation will lose inherited traits but retain unlocked locations, items, and Gotchi Points.

These are special companion devices located in Japan that offer unique content and interactions for the m!x. They feature minigames, flea markets for item trading, and the "M!x Generator" which predicts potential offspring appearances. The content on these stations changes seasonally, adding further variety to the gameplay experience.
