Tamagotchi was super popular back then. They sold 40 million in just q years! Now 28 years after they first came out in 1996, Tamagotchi has opened its first store in the UK. It’s in Camden Market in London. Young people are really excited about this. They’re making videos about the store on TikTok. Some of these people are millennials – that means they were kids when Tamagotchis first came out.
But these aren’t the same old Tamagotchis. They’ve gotten a lot fancier. Priya Jadeja, who works for the Bandai, says the new Tamagotchis can connect to Wi-Fi. That means you can play with your friends’ Tamagotchis and download new stuff for your pet. This isn’t just a quick comeback. The BBC says Tamagotchi sold twice as many toys in 2023 as they did in 2022. That’s why they opened this big store in the UK.
But why do people still like Tamagotchis? Liz Grampp, who also works for Bandai, thinks it’s because people like taking care of things. She says, “It’s about caring for a little virtual pet, and that feeling of taking care of something never goes away.”
Tamagotchis have changed a lot since they first came out. They used to just be a little egg with a simple pet on the screen. Now they can do all sorts of things, like connect to the internet.
But here’s a big question: Will young people today like Tamagotchis as much as kids did back in the 1990s?
