Devilgotchi (Debirutchi no Tamagotchi)
In the early days of September 1998, Japan witnessed the arrival of a unique Tamagotchi variant known as Debirutchi no Tamagotchi (デビルっちのたまごっち). This translates to “Devil Tamagotchi” in English, and quickly earned the colloquial moniker Devilgotchi among enthusiasts. The concept’s devilish twist captured the imagination of many.
It wasn’t until 2006 that the Devilgotchi made its official English-language debut. Rather than a physical device, this incarnation took the form of a mobile game titled Tamagotchi Monster. This digital adaptation brought the fiendish fun of the original Japanese release to a broader, international audience.
Design
The Devilgotchi looks a lot like the Angelgotchi. It has wings on both sides of the screen, but they’re devil wings instead of angel wings.
There are 4 different colors you can get:
- Purple and white with red buttons
- Black with white buttons
- Pink with yellow buttons
- White with black buttons
All of them have the word “Devilgotch” written on top.
Soft Screws
One big problem with the Devilgotchi is something called “Soft Screws.” All old Tamagotchi toys have screws that can break because they’re old. But the screws on the Devilgotchi’s battery cover are really easy to damage. They can break or get messed up very easily. If you try to take out damaged screws without special tools, you might hurt the device even more.

Gameplay
Devil Power (DP)
DP shows how naughty your Devilgotchi is. It’s like the opposite of Angel Power in the Tamagotchi Angel. High DP is bad.
- DP goes up over time.
- If DP gets to 100, it’s game over.
- If DP is 90 or higher, you’ll get a “Bad End.”
- Higher DP makes your Devilgotchi do more naughty things.
When your Devilgotchi is naughty, the toy beeps and the screen colors flip. Some naughty things it might do:
- Hide the Health Meter
- Throw pie at you
- Pretend to eat or nap
- Not let you clean up poop
- Do other bad stuff
To stop this, press the “Discipline” button (it looks like an angel) to scold it and lower DP.
Handshake
Sometimes your Devilgotchi wants to be friends. It’ll offer to shake hands. The toy beeps and shows a smiling devil. Press the handshake button (looks like a black hand) to shake. This lowers DP.
Game
Move your Devilgotchi character back and forth at the bottom of the screen. Use A and B buttons to drop stars. Catch 4 stars to get 2 Friend stars. Miss all 4, and DP goes up by 5.
Events
Special things happen at certain times, even when your Devilgotchi should be sleeping. There are 12 different events. The toy beeps when an event happens.
Leaving
Your Devilgotchi can leave 2 ways:
- If you ignore it and DP gets to 90 or higher (Bad End).
- When it gets old (Good End). It’ll look sad, then a curtain comes down saying “Good Friend.”
Special endings
- If friendship is full and DP is over 7, Girl Deviltchi might become Twin Deviltchi before leaving.
- Clione Deviltchi (a special, angel-like devil) gets taken home by 2 Chestnut Angels.
Tamagotchi Monster
The digital age breathed new life into the Devilgotchi concept, as it found its way onto cell phones on March 6, 2006. This mobile adaptation paved the way for a global release in May 2008, rebranded as Tamagotchi Monster. While the core gameplay remained faithful to its predecessor, several noteworthy alterations were implemented to suit the new platform and international audience.
One of the most significant changes involved the renaming of the central mechanic. The ominous Devil Power (DP) underwent a transformation, emerging as the more broadly appealing Monster Power (MP). This subtle shift in terminology allowed the game to maintain its mischievous essence while sidestepping potential cultural sensitivities associated with devilish imagery.
The developers also took the opportunity to refine certain visual elements. Most notably, they replaced the original toilet icon, a playfully provocative image of buttocks adorned with devil wings, with a more subdued representation: a roll of black toilet paper. This adjustment, while minor, exemplifies the careful balance struck between preserving the game’s impish charm and adapting it for a diverse global market.
Despite these modifications, Tamagotchi Monster succeeded in capturing the essence of its physical predecessor. The mobile format introduced the quirky virtual pet to a new generation of players, allowing them to experience the unique challenges and delights of raising a mischievous digital creature on their phones.
Tips & Tricks
1. When you start your Devilgotchi, a black bat flaps on the screen. Press B to access the time setting, using A for hours and B for minutes. Confirm with C. After a brief bat animation, your devil appears with empty hungry hearts, 2 happy hearts and 40 DP (devil power).
2. The status menu serves as your window into your devil’s well-being and temperament. At a glance, you can assess its age, hunger level, overall happiness, and the crucial devil power score. While tending to your devil’s basic needs is important, managing its devilish tendencies takes center stage. Your primary goal is to keep the devil power score as low as possible.
3. When your devil acts out, swift disciplinary action is key. By consistently correcting misbehavior, you’ll gradually reduce the devil power.
4. The food menu provides essential food for your devil, offering 2 distinct options to cater to different needs. A slice of pie serves as the primary food, filling 1 hungry heart. For a boost in mood, a piece of chocolate does the trick, replenishing 1 happy heart and elevating your devil’s friendliness.
5. The game icon unlocks a playful interaction with your impish companion. In this challenge, your devil’s agility and your timing skills are put to the test. A quick press of the A or B button releases a star from the left or right side of the screen, respectively. The key to success lies in your ability to anticipate your devil’s movement and time the star’s descent perfectly. As your devil scurries across the bottom of the screen, your goal is to guide the falling stars directly into its waiting mouth. Each successful catch not only entertains your virtual pet, but also strengthens your bond, rewarding you with 1 happy heart.
6. When the screen suddenly turns black, it’s a clear signal that your devil is up to no good. In these moments, swift action is crucial. Select the discipline icon to discipline. The frequency of these misdeeds is directly tied to your devil’s devil power (DP) level: the higher the DP, the more often you’ll find yourself playing disciplinarian. Each successful intervention not only corrects the immediate misbehavior but also lowers your devil’s DP by 10 points, gradually steering it towards a more manageable disposition.
7. The character screen offers a simple yet useful feature for managing your Devilgotchi’s audio output. When you find yourself in a situation that calls for silence, simply press the A and C buttons at the same time while on this screen. This action will instantly mute all sounds. Should you wish to restore the audio, repeating the same button combination – pressing A and C simultaneously – will reactivate the sound.
8. Devil Power (DP) doesn’t require constant high maintenance. Instead, it’s most crucial during evolution periods, occurring roughly every 3 days. The DP level at evolution significantly influences character development, allowing for varied outcomes.
Devil Power
Devil Power (DP) serves as a unique metric in the Devilgotchi, quantifying the virtual pet’s mischievous tendencies. Unlike the Angel Power in Tamagotchi Angel, where a high score is desirable, an elevated DP spells trouble for Devilgotchi owners. This inverse relationship creates a constant challenge, as DP naturally increases over time, pushing players to actively manage their pet’s naughty behavior.
The stakes are high in this devilish game of nurture. Should the DP reach the ominous threshold of 90 or above, a “Bad End” looms, threatening to cut short your demonic companion’s digital life. This precarious balance forms the core of the Devilgotchi experience, keeping players on their toes as they strive to tame their impish charge.
DP plays a crucial role in shaping your Devilgotchi’s evolution. Higher scores lead to more troublesome character outcomes and increase the likelihood of naughty deeds. These misdeeds manifest in various ways, from playful antics like pretending to eat chocolate to more disruptive behaviors such as obscuring the Health Meter or resisting cleanup efforts.
When your Devilgotchi acts out, the game alerts you with a beep and inverted screen colors. Swift action is required; players must employ the Kamidanomi (Discipline) icon, symbolized by an angel, to scold their pet and reduce its DP. Neglecting these disciplinary measures can have significant consequences. For instance, a Bird Deviltchi maintained for six days with zero Hungry, zero Friendship, and over 80 DP can evolve into the formidable King Deviltchi if left unchecked during a mischievous episode.
This intricate system of care, discipline, and evolution creates a uniquely engaging experience, challenging players to balance their Devilgotchi’s inherent naughtiness with proper guidance and timely intervention.
Events
The Devilgotchi experience is punctuated by a series of intriguing special events that occur at various times. These moments can happen at any time, even during periods when your devilish companion is meant to be sleeping.
In total, there are 12 distinct events programmed into the Devilgotchi. The nature and frequency of these events aren’t uniform across all characters. Instead, they vary depending on which specific devil you’re raising. .
The Devilgotchi beeps when an event is triggered. This auditory cue serves as a call to attention, prompting you to check and see what mischief is unfolding.

Let its Devil Power (DP) get over 80. When it’s been alive for at least six days and does something naughty, don’t punish it. Just ignore the bad behavior. If you do all this, Bird Deviltchi will turn into King Deviltchi when the naughty action is over. | ||
Twin Deviltchi | Special Class Devil | Just before Girl Deviltchi leaves due to old age, make sure its Friendship meter is full (at 4) and its Devil Power (DP) is between 80 and 95. If you do this, there’s a chance Girl Deviltchi will change into Twin Deviltchi right before saying goodbye. This is a special ending you can only see if you get these conditions just right at the very end of Girl Deviltchi’s life. |
