Tamagotchi Uni
The Tamagotchi Uni (たまごっち ユニ) is a new Tamagotchi release that came out on July 15, 2023. It’s made by Bandai Toys. The Uni is newer and better than older Tamagotchi toys like the Smart and the Pix. What’s cool about the Uni is that it has a color screen, and it came out in many countries at the same time. People in 12 different places, like the USA, Mexico, Japan, and some countries in Europe, could all buy it on the same day.
Design
The Tamagotchi Uni looks a lot like the Tamagotchi Smart. It’s small, about the same size as the Smart. You can wear it like a watch on your wrist. The Uni has a wavy, rippled pattern around its screen, and its watch strap is wavy, too.
Unlike some other Tamagotchi releases, the Uni has real buttons you can press. These buttons, and the back of the device, are see-through. Like the Smart, the Uni can count your steps when you walk.
What makes the Uni special is that it can connect to the Internet using Wi-Fi. It uses something called Amazon Web Services (AWS) to do this. This is new for a Tamagotchi toy.

Gameplay
Languages
When you first set up your Tamagotchi Uni, you get to choose what language you want to use. You have seven choices: English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, and Japanese. This happens when you’re setting the date, time, and entering your name and birthday.
UniTama
Every Tamagotchi character on the Uni gets its own unique personality. It doesn’t matter what kind of Tamagotchi it is – it could be shy, energetic, chill, spoiled, or honest. This personality affects how they act in different situations. For example, they might have different animations when they’re not doing anything, or they might react differently when interacting with you or other Tamagotchi characters.
These UniTamas also have their own favorite items. The more they play with these items, the better they get at using them. They also have likes and dislikes when it comes to fashion and how their home is decorated. A Tamagotchi gets its personality when it’s born and keeps it for its whole life.
When you first start your Uni, you get to choose one of three eggs: blue, pink, or green. Unlike some older Tamagotchi toys, the color of the egg doesn’t really change how your Tamagotchi grows up. When your Tamagotchi gets married and moves out, it leaves behind an egg of the same color it came from.
There’s something special that happens every 5th generation. If the egg comes from a marriage that happened in the Tamagotchi Party feature on Tamaverse (we’ll talk about that later), you might get a rainbow egg instead of the usual color. This rainbow egg means you have a chance to get special adult Tamagotchis called Hypertchi or Bubbletchi, if you take care of them the right way.
Milestones
As you raise your Tamagotchi, you can earn special care icons. You get these by raising an adult for the first time or by doing certain things. You can see these icons in the status menu. Some achievements have different levels, so you can get more than one icon for doing the same thing many times.
Daily Events
Your Tamagotchi does different things at set times throughout the day. Here’s what happens:
- 7:00 AM: The Tamagotchi yawns. It does this again 15 minutes before bedtime.
- 7:30 AM: It goes to the bathroom and brushes its teeth.
- 1:00 PM: It takes a nap in a blanket.
- 3:00 PM: It goes to the kitchen to ask for a snack.
- 4:00 PM: It asks you a question or says something to you.
- 5:00 PM: It sings to you.
- 7:00 PM: It plays on its tablet and posts something on social media.
- 7:30 PM: It goes to the bathroom and brushes its teeth again.
Monthly Events
Special things happen on certain days each month. Here are some examples:
- January 1st: The Tamagotchi gets a New Year’s Day gift.
- March 31st to April 4th: A character called Usatchi brings Easter Eggs.
- September 15th: If you visit the backyard after 7 PM, your Tamagotchi will make mochi (a Japanese treat) to share with the moon, which is hiding.
- November 23rd: Your Tamagotchi visits Gotchi King Castle to celebrate the Tamagotchi franchise’s birthday.
- December 24th: Characters called Santaclautchi and Rednosetchi bring presents.
- December 25th: Your Tamagotchi opens the gift from Santaclautchi.
- On your birthday: Your Tamagotchi wishes you happy birthday and gives you a cake.
There are also other events that happen regularly:
- On the 5th of each month, your Tamagotchi finds Gotchi Points in the backyard.
- On the 19th of each month, a group of characters called Shirotamas sing to your Tamagotchi in the backyard.
- On the 15th of even-numbered months, a ghost appears in the living room at night.
- On the 25th of odd-numbered months, a character called Mittsupotchi uses your Tamagotchi’s toilet and pays them 10 Gotchi Points.
Tama Walk
Like an older Tamagotchi toy called the Smart, the Uni counts your steps when you walk. There’s a special feature called Tama Walk that you can use by pressing the door icon. Your Tamagotchi can visit different places and take a 20-minute walk with you. During these walks, they might meet other Tamagotchi characters. You can get recipes for making things (called DIY crafting recipes) and materials for making these things.
Your Tamagotchi might decide to take a picture about the best part of their walk and post it on social media. They’ll add comments and tags to the picture, even if they’re not actually in it. You can collect as many crafting materials as you want by going on multiple walks, but you can only get one new recipe each day.
There are different places you can walk:
- Tama Street
- Tama Park
- A place that changes with the seasons:
- Spring: Flower Hills
- Summer: Mermaid Palace/Sea
- Autumn: Patchi Forest
- Winter: North North Point/Snow Town
- Tama Farm
Tama Farm
At Tama Farm, which you can find under the Tama Walk menu, a character called Hatakemotchi runs things. Here’s how it works:
Your Tamagotchi has 30 seconds to run around collecting as much fruit as they can. You tilt the Uni device to make your Tamagotchi move in different directions. Each fruit is linked to one of eleven dye colors. For every three pieces of the same type of fruit you collect, you get one bottle of that color dye.
Tama Search
Tama Search is like a feature called Explore from an older Tamagotchi toy. Here’s how it works:
- Press the C button when you’re in the living room to start Tama Search.
- Your Tamagotchi will go out into town and keep walking until the Uni finds a Wi-Fi signal.
- All the Wi-Fi signals nearby turn into special codes made of letters and numbers.
- You choose one of these codes, and your Tamagotchi meets a character.
After your Tamagotchi meets a character, they get a sticker for their collection. If they meet the same character many times, they become better friends. When they’re best friends, the character invites your Tamagotchi to play in their room.
In the future, you might be able to meet up to 100 different characters. The makers of Tamagotchi will add more characters over time with updates.
Items
Your Tamagotchi has likes and dislikes for different items. This depends on their personality more than what kind of Tamagotchi they are. If they don’t like a toy, they won’t play with it.
To clean rooms when they get dirty, you need to choose the Cleaning Robot from the items menu. It’s not under the toilet icon anymore.
The food and items you can get from delivery and the Tama Mall change based on the current date on your device. This includes when things go on sale. When you order food, you can buy up to three servings at once now.
You can use furniture, toys, and some accessories to decorate your Tamagotchi’s house or yard. Your Tamagotchi might comment on the things in their house, take photos of new stuff for social media, or ask to play with a toy in the main room. They might even bring a favorite toy to their bedroom.
If you put away something your Tamagotchi likes, it might make them sad. You’ll see this if they show a thought bubble with the item in it. If you leave certain items outside, you might attract different kinds of Tama Pets that you can adopt.
You can get items in different ways:
- Buy them from the shop
- Get them after a Tamaverse tour
- Receive them as a random gift during the day
- Make them yourself (or with a friend) using materials and recipes
Some items might only come with certain Tamagotchi Uni shells, or you might need to buy special add-ons (called DLC) that come with specific accessories.
Crafting
After you get crafting recipes and materials from Tama Walk, you can make unique accessories for your Tamagotchi to wear. You do this using the craft function in the items menu. Here’s how it works:
- You combine two or three items and a color dye.
- This lets you make many accessories in up to eleven different colors.
- When you connect with another Uni, each person can choose one material to make matching accessories together, even if you don’t have the recipe.
Your Tamagotchi can wear accessories from childhood onwards. There are four categories of accessories, and most of them can be worn at the same time, letting you mix and match.
If you don’t take good care of your Tamagotchi, they might get lazy and throw their accessories on the floor. Most accessories come off when your Tamagotchi goes to bed at night, and they put them back on when they wake up. How they put on their accessories depends on their personality.
Games
The Uni has 6 games in total. You can find these games through the door icon, and your Tamagotchi can start playing them once they become a child. Two of these games are available all year round, but the other four can only be played during certain seasons.
Game Center
A character called Tamastetchi hosts these games. Playing these games makes your Tamagotchi happier and earns you Gotchi Points. You can use these points to buy items and furniture. Here are the games:
- Dancing: A Shirotama (a type of Tamagotchi) shows you a dance move. You have to copy this move with the Uni strapped to your wrist. This makes your Tamagotchi dance correctly.
- Fast Food: Your Tamagotchi serves burgers to six Shirotamas in a fast food restaurant. When a Shirotama puts their menu down and calls for your Tamagotchi, you need to move the cursor to their table and select it to serve them. The game ends after you serve ten burgers.
- Egg Hunt (Spring only): You control a character called Usatchi as they walk around collecting easter eggs. Use the A and B buttons to move up and down.
- Best Photo (Summer only): Your Tamagotchi takes photos of a group of Shirotamas while fireworks go off in the background. There’s a bar at the bottom with a moving cursor. You need to stop the cursor when it reaches the red zone on the bar. It gets faster with each round. The game lasts for five rounds, and how good the photos are decides your ranking.
- Matching (Autumn only): Fruits and vegetables are shown briefly before being covered with leaves. You have to remember what was shown and then find two matching fruits or vegetables to collect them. Use the cursor to select.
- Snow Catch (Winter only): You control a character called Yukidamatchi with the A and B buttons. You collect snowflakes to grow into a big snowman. If you touch a water drop, the game ends.
Tama Pets
If you leave certain toys or furniture out in the yard, a Tama Pet might visit. If you change what item is outside, the current Tama Pet might disappear. The Tama Pet will also leave on its own after a few days.
Tamaverse
The Uni can connect to an online world called the Tamaverse using Wi-Fi. When you choose this option, your Tamagotchi puts on a VR headset to enter the Tamaverse. You can still use some features without internet. Here’s what you can do in the Tamaverse:
- Entrance: Your Tamagotchi can meet random users’ Tamagotchi characters. These characters will say hello in their own language. You can send hearts to Tamagotchi characters you like and see hearts you’ve received from other users.
- Tama Square: This area has three parts:
- Tama Party: Your Tamagotchi can meet other users’ Tamagotchi and maybe get married. Or, they can choose from four Tamagotchi to go on a date with before asking to marry them.
- Tama Travel: A character called Tourcontchi will take your Tamagotchi on a tour to an exciting place for 2000 Gotchi Points. At the end of the tour, your Tamagotchi brings back a souvenir.
- Tama Fashion: You can upload and try on outfits for Tamagotchi characters. You can also buy different accessory sets when you’re offline.
- Tama Arena: These are special game events that happen for a limited time. Your Tamagotchi works with or competes against other users’ Tamagotchi in mini-games to win rewards.
- Download: You can enter special codes to get exclusive gifts.
- Update: You can download new versions of the Tamagotchi software directly to your device. If your Uni’s software is old, you might not be able to use the online features until you update it.
- Info: This shows news, new information, and lets you earn special surprises.
Tama Portal
The Tama Portal is a special place in the Tamaverse where you can visit themed locations to get new content. This includes new characters to raise, places to do activities, mini-games, food, items, and accessories. It’s similar to something called the TamaSma Card from an older Tamagotchi toy.
To use a location, you need to:
- Register an account at the Tamaverse Ticket Shop
- Buy a location ticket
- Get a download code sent to your email
- Enter the code in your Uni
You can only have one area and its content on your Tamagotchi Uni at a time. If you get an adult Tamagotchi that’s only available in that content, you can’t remove its data until the next generation, or if the character runs away or dies.
Connectivity
Two Uni devices can connect to each other directly. When they connect, you can:
- Play games together
- Exchange items
- Craft special accessories that you can only make together
- Get married using the “Propose” option
There are two special Tamagotchi characters, Shimashimatchi and Yattatchi, that you can only get by marrying two different Uni devices.
Social Media Posts
Every day at 7pm, if your Tamagotchi is a child or older, they will make a post on social media. You can see them doing this with a tablet in the main room. These posts are about something they did that day. You can save pictures of these posts on your phone by using QR codes, just like you can with profile screens.
Sometimes, certain events might be more important and get posted about instead. If your Tamagotchi is feeling neglected, or if nothing interesting has happened since they woke up, they might make a post without any picture.
Marriage and Moving Out
In the Uni, things work a bit differently than in some older Tamagotchi toys. When two Unis have a wedding, the babies can be boys or girls. The egg they come from will be the same color as the parent from that device.
If the baby is a boy, it might grow up to be a special character called Shimashimatchi. If it’s a girl, it might become Yattatchi. But this only happens if they meet certain conditions as they grow up.
When Tamagotchi get married by connecting 2 Uni devices, the wedding scene is shorter than when they marry in the Tamaverse. Instead of asking to get married, one Tamagotchi asks the other to move out together to their own house. The device that’s being proposed to will ask you if you want to say yes or no.
There’s also a new way to start a new generation. About 4 days after your adult Tamagotchi evolves, they might tell you they feel ready to start life on their own. They’ll say they want to follow their dreams and ask if they can move out. The Uni will ask you several times if you’re sure it’s okay for them to leave. If you say no, they’ll ask again in a few days. If you let them move out, you get to choose what color egg you want for the next generation.
The Uni doesn’t keep track of generations in the status menu like some older Tamagotchi toys did. Instead, it keeps a record of your previous Tamagotchi in a separate section, similar to how it remembers Tamagotchi who have died. It only shows the most recent 5 Tamagotchi. After that, the oldest one gets deleted from the record.
If you started a new generation through marriage, something special might happen. When your new Tamagotchi enters the Tamaverse, there’s a chance they might meet up with their parent. If this happens, they’ll dance together and earn some Gotchi Points from the crowd watching them.
Tamagotchi born through a Tamaverse marriage get some extra benefits:
- When they become a child, they receive a special gift from their other parent. The gift depends on what region the other parent was from.
- If they are from a generation that’s a multiple of five (like the 5th, 10th, or 15th generation), they might be able to evolve into special characters called Hypertchi or Bubbletchi.
Starting from version 1.6.0 of the Uni software, any Tamagotchi that meets these generation requirements (being a multiple of 5) will hatch out of a rainbow egg.
Accessories
You can buy accessories to make your Tamagotchi Uni look cooler. Each of these extras comes with a special code. This code lets you get a new accessory or item to use in your Uni.
- Lanyards: These are like necklaces for your Uni. You can buy two different ones:
- Unique Marble
- Unique Black
- Watch Bands: These are straps that let you wear your Uni like a watch. You can buy two colors:
- Black
- White
These extras let you personalize your Tamagotchi Uni and make it look the way you want.
